The Conference on Pseudomonas syringae which started in 1973 as an informal meeting of a group of scientists working on these bacteria in Angers, France, has become more and more important with time. Many meetings have been held since then: 1984, 1987, 1991, 1995, and 2002 in Cape Sounion, Greece; Lisbon, Portugal; Florence, Italy; Berlin, Germany; and Maratea, Italy; respectively. This Conference is considered as the most important scientific forum in which recent advances in different research aspects on Pseudomonas syringae, a plant pathogenic bacterial species that includes a high number of pathogens (referred as pathovars) and Related Pathogens such as Acidovorax, Burkholderia, Ralstonia, affecting several economically important crops. The proceedings resulting from these meetings are considered as valuable sources of information related to this group of pathogens.

Minerals, organic matter and microorganisms are the major solid components in soil systems. These three constituents do not function independently but rather interact with each other constantly at all times and everywhere in the soil ecosystem. The interactions profoundly affect a series of physical, chemical and biological processes of soils including the behavior, transformation and fate of various nutrients and pollutants. The research on these interactions should, thus, be an important issue for Soil and Environmental Scientists. Therefore, the International Society of Soil Science established the Working Group MO in 1990, which was promoted to a new Commission 2.5 Soil Physical/Chemical/Biological Interfacial Interactions of the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) in 2004. To date, the Working Group has sponsored four international symposia and these conferences were held in Edmonton (Canada, 1992), Nancy (France, 1996), Naples (Italy, 2000) and Wuhan (China, 2004), respectively.

Man-made changes in the climate system, consisting of atmosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, lithosphere and biosphere represent a most serious challenge not only to the planet’s ecosystems and their natural environment but to human civilizations. As a reaction, scientific disciplines such as bioclimatology, genetics, hydrology, bio-hydrology and eco-physiology are now considered an important part of forestry, agriculture, water management, environmental protection, and natural hazards control (e.g., droughts, floods, windstorms, weather extremes, and wild fires). Bioclimatology provides an integrated, interdisciplinary framework for dealing with contemporary challenges of natural hazards. Bioclimatology has also the potential to assess and predict extreme weather events in a very complex way.

We are living in an interesting world. Our society has achieved enormous advances in quality of life due to an extensive discovery and availability of plastics derived from petroleum. However, as with any technology, unanticipated negative secondary effects are produced as well. The persistence of plastics in the environment, shortage of landfill space, concerns over emissions resulting from incineration, and hazards to human health as well as hazards to animals, birds, and fish from entrapment or ingestion of these materials have spurred the efforts to find more environment friendly alternative materials. The depletion of petroleum resources coupled with increase in environmental regulations have added to this effort of finding new materials and products that are compatible with the environment and independent of fossil fuels. Industries are developing and manufacturing “greener” materials; government is encouraging biobased product research; academicians are searching for eco-friendly materials; and the public is coming to value the benefit of environment friendly products and processes, but at affordable prices. Biobased materials offer a potential solution to this complex problem.

Cell signaling, which is also often referred to as signal transduction or transmembrane signaling, is the process by which cells communicate with their environment and respond temporally to external cues that they sense there.
