Since the 1960s, the radiological science community has developed and applied more than 90 computational models of the human body—often referred to as “phantoms”—for ionizing radiation dosimetry studies. Each of the models not only defi nes the exterior features of the entire human body, but also includes extensive details on internal organs such as volume, mass, shape, and tissue composition. These computational phantoms are combined with Monte Carlo methods to precisely simulate complex radiation interactions and energy depositions in the human body involving various particles such as photons (x-rays and gamma rays), electrons, neutrons, and protons. Organ dose estimates, often normalized by measurable parameters, have been calculated for different irradiation scenarios found in occupational radiation protection, nuclear medicine, diagnostic imaging, and radiotherapy. Over the years, data derived from these computational phantoms have been adopted into the recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) and other international and national bodies.

Идея полиметрический геометрии возникла в связи с рабротой автора над проблемами метрической двойственности, поставленными проф. Каганом. Как известно, на элетической плоскости (и, с некоторыми изъянами, на плоскостях евклидовой и гиперболической) имеет место метрическая двойственность. Геометрия прямых с углами между ними эквивалентна геометрии точек с расстояниями между ними и представляет, таким образом, частный случай римановой геометрии. Проф. В. Ф. Кагану принадлежит ряд исследований, обнаруживающих это последнее свойство и для других семейств кривых на плоскости.

The resonant interaction of the atomic system with the radiation field is the main member of the functional circuit of the laser. The redistribution of the population of the energy levels of the medium, accompanying this interaction, indicates the principle of the unremovable nonlinearity of the system. The lasing process is also affected by other nonlinearities, if they are typical of the media located inside the laser cavity. The nature of the processes may change as a result of the external effects, accompanying the variation of the laser parameters with time. Examination of the role of interactions and effects of this type and also their influence on the time, spatial and spectral characteristics of laser radiation and the justification of practical methods of controlling the lasing process are the subjects of tasks in laser dynamics.

This book arose from a desire to celebrate the career and scientific accomplishments of our friend and mentor, David Buckingham. As the date of David's anticipated retirement from his Chair at Cambridge approached, a number of colleagues and former students, including ourselves, started to plan a suitable celebratory occasion in David' s honour: a three-day symposium in Cambridge on 10-13 July 1997. The conference has the same title as this book, namely, "Optical, Electric and Magnetic Properties of Molecules". In the process of preparing for that occasion, we evolved the additional idea of a more lasting tribute to David, that would capture his spirit and gather together some of his finest contributions to science. Whether this book meets that objective will be for the reader to judge.
