Flight is a relatively simple and widely studied phenomenon. As surprising as it may sound, though, it is more often than not misunderstood. For example, most descriptions of the physics of lift fixate on the shape of the wing (i.e., airfoil) as the key factor in understanding lift. The wings in these descriptions have a bulge on the top so that the air must travel farther over the top than under the wing. Yet we all know that wings fly quite well upside down, where the shape of the wing is inverted. This is demonstrated by the Thunderbirds in Figure I.1, with wings of almost no thickness at all. To cover for this paradox, we sometimes see a description for inverted flight that is different than for normal flight. In reality, the shape of the wing has little to do with how lift is generated, and any description that relies on the shape of the wing is misleading at best. This assertion will be discussed in detail in Chapter 1. It should be noted that the shape of the wing does has everything to do with the efficiency of the wing at cruise speeds and with stall characteristics.

This is intended as a useful handbook on the subject of bridge hydraulics. It includes references to articles published in 1997, just prior to its completion, so compared with similar books it is relatively up to date. It explores how to undertake the hydraulic analysis or design of a bridge, either single or multispan, with either rectangular or arched waterways. It describes how to calculate the afflux (backwater), how to improve the hydraulic performance of a bridge, and how to evaluate and combat scour. The intention is to provide a good introduction to the fundamentals for anyone not familiar with this specalised branch of engineering, with enough detailed information to appeal to those who are.

Under the rubric of synchrotron radiation we understand the electromagnetic waves emitted by a charge moving with relativistic velocity and undergoing a transverse acceleration. It is characterized by a small opening angle and a high frequency caused by the velocity of the charge being close to that of light. Owing to the relatively simple motion of the charge, the radiation has clear polarization properties. Ordinary synchrotron radiation is emitted by a charge moving on a circular arc determined by a deflecting magnetic field. It has a broad spectrum, a typical frequency being ? 3 times higher than the Larmor frequency of the charge. This spectrum can be modified by varying the curvature of the trajectory 1/? within a distance smaller than the formation length of the radiation, as is realized in undulators.

Subatomic Physics has continued to make rapid strides since the 2nd. Edition was published in 1991 (by Prentice-Hall). New particles have been found; the distributions of electric charge and magnetism within the proton have been found to be significantly different; neutrinos have been found to have masses and undergo oscillations, and the standard model needs to be accordingly modified; CP violation has been established to be compatible with the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix; chiral and effective field theories have been developed, lattice QCD has made enormous strides. Nuclear structure far from the region of stability has started to been studied, relativistic heavy ions have opened new doors and understanding, and astrophysics and cosmology have provided us with a much improved understanding of the world around us. Data has become much more precise. Although there is a perception that physics has changed from being a unified science to a series of subfields that ignore each other, here we find the opposite: in the last twenty years there has been much progress at the intersection between atomic, nuclear, particle, and astro physics.

There are very few serious monographs on polymer thermodynamics. The problems of this science are mainly considered in the courses or monographs 011 thc physical chemistry of polymers, the statistical physics of molecular chains (conformational and configurational statistics), in books dealing with the principles of scaling, intramolecular phase or cooperative transformations, and, finally, in mini-monographs (I would refer them to the category of manuals) treating direct applications of thermodynamics to various chemical and physical polymer technologies. Books dealing with either rough applications or new high technologies are most abundant, but it is difficult to find in them even a trace of thermodynamics-in the proper sense of the word.
