This textbook deals with the requirements of space physics. The first part starts with a description of the Earth's plasma environment, followed by a derivation of single particle motions in electromagnetic fields, with applications to the Earth's magnetosphere. Then the origin and effects of collisions and conductivities, formation of the ionosphere, magnetospheric convection and dynamics, and solar wind-magnetosphere coupling are discussed. The second part of the book presents a more theoretical foundation of plasma physics, starting from kinetic theory. Introducing moments of the distribution function permits derivation of the fluid equations, followed by an analysis of fluid boundaries, with the Earth's magnetopause and bow shock as examples.

Understanding the dynamics of free surface flows is the starting point of many environmental studies, impact studies, and waterworks design. Typical applications, once the flows are known, are water quality, dam impact and safety, pollutant control, and sediment transport. These studies used to be done in the past with scale models, but these are now being replaced by numerical simulation performed by software suites called “hydro-informatic systems”. The Telemac system is the leading software package worldwide, and has been developed by Electricite de France and Jean-Michel Hervouet, who is the head and main developer of the Telemac project.

Over the last 50 years, we have witnessed an extraordinary evolution and progress in optical science and engineering. When lasers were invented as light sources in 1960, cladded glass rods were proposed as transmission media in 1966; few, if any, would foresee their impact on the daily life of the modern society. Today, lasers and fibers are the key building blocks of optical communication systems that touch all walks of life. Optical devices may be in the “bulk” or guided-wave optic forms. Guided-wave optic components are relatively new and much remains to be accomplished or realized. Quantum Chromodynamics becomes now – moving into the second decade of the twentyfirst century – a very extended theory with many branches. Therefore, it is impossible to expose in one book the whole QCD with all its branches and applications. On the other hand, it is a rapidly developing theory and for the authors of a book on QCD it is a serious danger to go too close to the border between that which is known with certainty and the domain of unknown. For these reasons, we decided to present in this book some aspects of QCD that are not very closely related to one another. In the selection of these aspects, surely, the individual preferences of authors also played a role.

This book grew out of a series of courses that I developed and taught over many years in the areas of lasers, optoelectronics, and photonics. Although these courses have been taught in the physics department, I have made a conscious effort to keep them accessible to nonphysics majors, especially sophomores and juniors from engineering or the other sciences. These students are typically looking for a survey course to introduce them to the basic elements of photonics and lasers, often to fulfill a science “distribution requirement.” It has always been difficult to find an appropriate textbook for such a course because the existing books in these areas are aimed at either too high a level or too low a level, or they cover only a portion of the topics that are needed. In teaching these classes, I came to rely mostly on my lecture notes as the reading material for the course. This need for a truly introductory level book, covering a wide range of topics in photonics and lasers, was my motivation for writing this book.

In this text, we present an introduction to the topological dynamics of two classical flows associated with surfaces of curvature ?1, namely the geodesic and horocycle flows. Since the end of the nineteenth century, many texts have been written on this subject. Why have we undertaken this project? In the course of several talks that we have given on this topic, notably during some summer workshops which were organized by the University of Savoie, we have often regretted not being able to recommend a book to those who wanted to find out about this area for themselves. Due to their determination and their enthusiasm for the subject, we decided to go beyond the stage of regret and write up our notes.
