The concept of energy harvesting signifies an integrated approach to the gathering of energy, usually fiom natural resources, with centralised collection providing for subsequent distribution according to requirements. On Earth, by far the most significant source of available energy is solar in origin. For the abundance of the environmental resource it represents, and also the extent of its geographic availability, solar energy easily outstrips any competition. Each year, in excess of J of solar energy impinges on the Earth, surpassing by a factor of more than a hundred the next largest source, wind energy.

Systems at the surface of the Earth are continually responding to energy inputs derived ultimately from radiation from the Sun or from the radiogenic heat in the interior. These energy inputs drive plate movements and erosion, exposing metastable mineral phases at the Earth’s surface. In addition, these energy fluxes are harvested and transformed by living organisms. As long as these processes persist, chemical disequilibrium at the Earth’s surface will be perpetuated. In addition, as human populations grow, the need to produce food, extract water, and extract energy resources increases. These processes continually contribute to chemical disequilibrium at the Earth surface. We therefore find it necessary to predict how the surface regolith will change in response to anthropogenic processes as well as long-term climatic and tectonic forcings.

There are many books on special and general relativity available on the market of varying lengths and degrees of difficulty. Some emphasize the mathematics, others the physics behind these two theories. This book is primarily concerned with the mathematical structure of general relativity, and is written for the student of relativity who has preparation in differential geometry, on the level of manifolds and Riemannian geometry. Readers should not expect an in-depth discussion of general relativity, and so will need to consult other books and texts to gain further understanding. Chapter 1 outlines the theory of special relativity, with discussion first on the Lorentz transformations. The Lorentz group is defined, along with its generalization the Poincare group. Both of these groups could be viewed both mathematically and physically as a constraint on the construction of physical theories. Theories not satisfying the constraint of Lorentz or Poincare covariance cannot be physical theories. The famous Minkowski space is constructed, and the author discusses the (indefinite) norm on this space using an interesting formulation due to A.A. Robb. After a brief discussion of the principle of equivalence, the author begins a study of the (pseudo-Riemmanian) geometry of space-time in chapter 2. He constructs, using very simple geometric considerations and elementary physical reasoning, a pseudo-Riemannian metric that yields in chapter 3, after some "heuristic" considerations, the Einstein gravitational field equations. This derivation is interesting in that the Einstein equations are viewed as a generalization of Poisson's equation. The charge density is replaced by a "mass density" and the Laplacian of the scalar potential by an expression involving the Laplacian of the square root of the zeroth component of the metric of space-time. The stress-energy-momentum tensor is related to this Laplacian, and the Einstein equations follow immediately.

In any area of physical science there are stages in its historical development at which it becomes possible and desirable to pull its theory together into a more coherent and unified whole. Grand examples from physics spring immediately to mind - Maxwell's electro-magnetic theory, Dime's synthesis of wave-mechanics and matrix mechanics, the Salam-Weinberg electro-weak theory. Yet this process of unification takes place on every scale. One example of immediate concern to us in this book here is afforded by the emergence of the thermodynamics of irreversible processes, where the coming together of separate strands of theory is made plainly visible in the short book by Denbigh (1951). In connection with imperfections in crystal lattices the Pocono Manor Symposium held in 1950 (Shockley et a\. 1952) might be said to mark another such stage of synthesis.

How many times has it been said that surface science has come of age? Rather than being a fledgling area of study, it is now patently clear that the investigation of solid surfaces and related interfacial problems is a unique field with profound implications for basic (dare one say academic!) scientific study and the understanding of materials. Surface science provides major support to many technologically ambitious industries. The book itself forms an introductory text on electrostatic optics and is accompanied by a disk containing a program for the IBM personal computer. This program, which is described in detail in chapter 6 and an appendix, will calculate the focal and aberration properties of a range of lenses and will also allow the study of the imaging behaviour between conjugate planes. Ray paths are traced in the paraxial approximation. A graphical display (Hercules, CGA, EGA or VGA) is required to run the program, and a maths coprocessor is very desirable. Only non-relativistic energies are considered and the electrode geometries are all very simple and easily manufactured.

Soon after Mller and Bednorz found superconductivity at temperatures above 30 K in perovskite related complex oxides, cuprate superconductors have been prepared with critical temperatures Tc well above 77 K – the boiling point of liquid nitrogen. During the nineties three fundamental structural families of oxide superconductors have been found, including Bi, Tl or Hg based materials with Tc up to about 130 K and rare earth barium cuprates with Tc typically between 90 and 97 K. Although the physical nature of this “high temperature” superconductivity is not completely understood this has not been an obstacle for technical application, because of certain unique properties which make them highly interesting from the technical point of view and very soon engineers started to investigate their technical potential.
