I have been working on theoretical and computational studies of the electronic, optical and magnetic properties of semiconductor heterostructures for well over a decade. During this time I have had to follow through various theoretical derivations from either books or research papers and frankly I've struggled time and time again. There never seems to be enough detail and what is commonly a couple of lines in a research paper can literally turn into many pages of precise mathematics. With the advent of computers and their wide application to science, the emphasis of theoretical work has changed. Years ago, theoreticians aimed to produce short neat relationships, which summarised physical effects. The concentration dependency of the metal-insulator transition of Mott is an excellent example of a complex process summarised in a compact equation, which could then be evaluated by hand. The modern approach to the same problem would be to take a microscopic model of a semiconductor, calculate the bandstructure, and then vary the impurity concentration, thus deducing an empirical relationship from the numerics. The material system would then be changed and the process repeated. It would therefore appear that the old way was preferable, but in these times of materials modelling and device design, quantitative results are what we're paid for.

If Maurice Jacob states "La physique est une science experimentale", this stands as a fact and does not need any proof. If, however, T.D.Lee says "We all know that the basis of physics is experiment", this does need a proof. It not only states the fact, but also claims that the fact is known to all of us. This is much more and not always obvious. The proof refers to old Archimed shown in [2] on a sixteenth-century wood engraving (Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris) as sitting in a barrel of water and being described as "erster erfinder scharpffsinniger vergleichung ". Who can afford not to know about the bath of Archimed, so indeed we all know! Lee then continues by postulating two laws of physicists, T.D. Lee's first law of physicists: "Without experimentalists, theorists tend to drift." T.D. Lee's second law of physicists: "Without theorists, experimentalists tend to falter".

Roughly a century has passed after the first ideas by Oliver Lodge, George Francis FitzGerald and Kristian Birkeland about particle clouds emanating from the Sun and interacting with the Earth environment. Only a few decades after the formulation of the concepts of a continuous solar corpuscular radiation by Ludwig Biermann and a solar wind by Eugene Parker, heliospheric physics has evolved into an important branch of astrophysical research. Numerous spacecraft missions have increased the knowledge about the heliosphere tremendously. Now, at the beginning of a new millennium it seems possible, by newly developed propulsion technologies to send a spacecraft beyond the boundaries of the heliosphere. Such an Interstellar Probe will start the in-situ exploration of interstellar space and, thus, can be considered as the first true astrophysical spacecraft. The year 2000 appeared to be a highly welcome occasion to review the achievements since the last COSPAR Colloquia 11 years ago, to summarize the present developments and to give new impulses for future activities in heliospheric research.

Materials science as a formal discipline has quietly emerged as one of the central pillars of the physical sciences. Whether one interests oneself in the creation of lighter, more durable surfboards, or in the invention of new technologies to free up the traffic jam on the world wide web, in the end, these questions will always imply demands which must be met by new classes of materials. Though the study of materials is largely rooted in the enlightened empiricism of traditional metallurgy, the advent of high-speed computers and the emergence of robust quantum simulations suggests new engineering strategies in which mechanism-based understanding might be hoped to lead to new materials. Although the concept of solid state nuclear magnetic resonance with magic angle spinning (MAS NMR) has been with us for many years, it is only over the last two decades that the technique has become increasingly used in other disciplines. The advantages of being able to probe the atomic environment of poorly crystalline materials were quickly appreciated by mineralogists and zeolite chemists, who exploited the fact that the two nuclides of major interest to mineral studies (29Si and 27A1) are readily amenable to MAS NMR study. Other subject areas, including ceramics, glasses and cements, have now followed this lead, and today MAS NMR is being applied to most of the major topics in the area of inorganic materials research.
