The need for this book arose from my teaching, engineering, and research experience in the non-power aspects of nuclear technology. The lack of a comprehensive textbook in industrial applications of radiation frustrated my students, who had to resort to a multitude of textbooks and research publications to familiarize themselves with the fundamental and practical aspects of radiation technology. As an engineer, I had to acquire the design aspects of radiation devices by trial-and-error, and often by accidental reading of a precious publication. As a researcher and a supervisor of graduate students, I found that the needed literature was either hard to find, or too scattered and diverse. More than once, I discovered that what appeared to be an exciting new idea was an old concept that was tried a few decades earlier during the golden era of “Atom for Peace”. I am hoping, therefore, that this book will serve as a single comprehensive reference source in a growing field that I expect will continue to expand.

This book gives an overview of statistical turbulence-modelling with applications to oceanography and limnology. It discusses how these models can be derived from the Navier-Stokes equations, step by step simplifications result in models applicable to numerical simulations for realistic solutions. Results from one-dimensional simulations are shown for various oceanic and limnic water column studies. The integration of these turbulence models in three-dimensioanl models is discussed and some selected results are shown.

Part A of this book describes clustering phenomena at nuclear and subnuclear scales. It surveys recent advances in the synthesis of superheavy elements, clustering phenomena in fission and fusion processes of heavy nuclei and the properties of heavy and superheavy nuclei in supernova experiments. Part B is devoted to recent advances in the understanding of structure and essential properties, such as nanomagnetism, electronic and geometric shell effects, of selected atomic cluster systems and confined atoms. Design and fabrication of vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) requires an iterative process, which is extremely expensive and time-consuming. The use of computer-aided design (CAD) tools can help shorten the design cycle and speed up the development process. Laser models, which are found in the literature, can be used to implement CAD tools for the analysis and design of VCSELs. However, some comprehensive models, which perform sophisticated functions, are difficult to implement and show low computational efficiency.

As in former editions of this book, I have expanded the present one to contain new sections on subjects beyond those found in the previous editions, thereby filling some of the existing gaps. Thus, we now have a section on heavy quark effective theories, one of the more powerful methods devised to take advantage of the existence a large scale (the mass of the heavy quark) for observables involving at least a heavy quark; a new section on lattice QCD, a method of calculation that is already giving reasonably reliable results for a number of observables; and several sections with a detailed discussion of chiral perturbation theory. There is little doubt that, at least at the one loop level, chiral perturbation theory has led to an important insight into pion physics in a region where methods derived from ordinary perturbation theory are not at applicable, which justifies this substantial addition. Besides this, I have corrected errors in the previous edition and improved, here and there, the material on several among the various topics; in particular, including more information on experiment, and on comparison of theory with experiment. The values of the basic QCD parameters have also been completely updated.

While the idea of cleverly using silicon–germanium (SiGe) and silicon (Si) strained-layer epitaxy to practice bandgap engineering of semiconductor devices in the highly manufacturable Si material system is an old one, only in the past decade has this concept become a practical reality. The final success of creating novel Si heterostructure transistors with performance far superior to their Si-only homojunction cousins, while maintaining strict compatibility with the massive economy-of-scale of conventional Si integrated circuit manufacturing, proved challenging and represents the sustained efforts of literally thousands of physicists, electrical engineers, material scientists, chemists, and technicians across theworld. In the electronics domain, the fruit of that global effort is SiGe heterojunction bipolar transistor (SiGe HBT) BiCMOS technology, and strained Si/SiGe CMOS technology, both of which are at present in commercial manufacturing worldwide and are rapidly finding a number of important circuit and system applications. As with any new integrated circuit technology, the industry is still actively exploring device performance and scaling limits (at present well above 300 GHz in frequency response, and rising), new circuit applications and potential new markets, as well as a host of novel device and structural innovations. This commercial success in the electronics arena is also spawning successful forays into the optoelectronics and even nanoelectronics fields. The Si heterostructure field is both exciting and dynamic in its scope.
