This book is for people who want to learn the fundamentals of meteorology without taking a formal course. It can serve as a supplemental text in a classroom, tutored, or home-schooling environment. This is a book on fluid dynamics. It is not a book on computation. Many excellent books on fluid dynamics are available: why is another needed? In recent decades, numerical algorithms and computer power have advanced to the point that computer simulations of the Navier–Stokes equations have become routine. This vastly expands our ability to solve these equations, further extending our understanding of fluid flow and providing a tool for engineering analysis. Computer simulations are solutions of a different nature from classical exact and approximate solutions. They are numerical data rather than formulas. One of our objectives in this text is to relate computer solutions to theoretical fluid dynamics. Indeed, it is this goal, rather than computation as a tool for complex engineering analysis, that provides the guideline for this text. Computer solutions can reproduce closed-form and approximate solutions; they can illuminate the merits and limits of simple analyses; and they can provide entirely new solutions of varying degrees of complexity. The time is ripe to integrate computer solutions into fluid dynamics education.

This book is much more than a monograph about a scientific topic; it also provides a historical account of the growth of a new field of research by some of its pioneers. As such it is a case study of the long road from observations to phenomenological description culminating in true physical understanding typical for the geophysical sciences. It also illustrates the strong dependence on international collaboration, in this particular case the stimulus provided by the International Geophysical Year (IGY). This field of research grew out of ground-based whistler observations conducted during the IGY on the one hand and the first in situ measurements in the space environment surrounding the Earth made possible with the concurrent advent of the space age, on the other.

Both QED and the kinetic theory of plasmas are concerned with the interaction between charged particles and the electromagnetic field, but they are radically different in the way the interaction is described. The kinetic theory of plasmas is a collective-medium theory: a plasma is not a collection of independent particles in a given electromagnetic field, but a medium in which the particles collectively modify the field, and the field modifies the particles. The charge and current densities associated with the particles are part of a self-consistent field. Conventionally, the kinetic theory of plasmas is a classical theory: the motions of particles are treated using classical dynamics.

The preparation of this second edition is motivated by the effectiveness of the first edition in classroom instruction, so the original structure and content have been retained. Our changes have been directed to the needs of students and other readers. Most obviously, we have moved the review of mathematics, formerly an appendix, to the front of the book (and, by labeling it Chapter 0, have conveniently preserved the structure and numbering throughout the following body of the text). We have added new textual material and figures in several places, most notably in Chapter 14, the chapter treating noncovalent chemical interactions; it is this chapter that most clearly distinguishes the content of this book from that of other thermodynamic texts. Two new appendices provide ancillary material that expands certain matters bordering the subject of classical thermodynamics.

Impulsive light-like signals in General Relativity are, like any models in theoretical physics, idealised mathematical models of objects that can arise in nature. In cataclysmic astrophysical events, such as supernovae and collisions of neutron stars, the final explosion produces a burst of matter travelling with the speed of light accompanied by a burst of gravitational radiation. These are the constituents of a general impulsive light-like signal. The gravitational fields of compact objects such as black-holes or neutron stars also resemble the fields of impulsive light-like signals when the objects are boosted to the speed of light. Spherically symmetric impulsive lightlike signals are useful in the study of gravitational collapse and also in providing classical models of quantum phenomena in black-hole physics such as Hawking radiation and the entropy of a black-hole. Impulsive lightlike signals play a central role in modeling black-hole production in highenergy collisions.

Applied Biofluid Mechanics contains two chapters that are explicitly devoted to cardiovascular and pulmonary physiology, as well as one chapter devoted to hematology (the study of blood). I used Biofluid Mechanics in Cardiovascular Systems as a textbook in my fluid mechanics course last fall, and it was well received by the students. Applied Biofluid Mechanics is a much improved textbook with review problem sets for each chapter, an on-line solutions manual, on-line photomicrographs, many more example problems, and expanded overall coverage.

The overall goal of this book is to develop a sound qualitative and quantitative understanding of the physics of natural river flows for practitioners and students with backgrounds in the earth sciences and natural resources who are primarily interested in understanding fluvial geomorphology. The treatment assumes an understanding of basic calculus and university-level physics. Civil engineers typically learn about rivers in a course called Open-Channel Flow. There are many excellent books on open-channel flow for engineers [most notably the classic texts by Chow (1959) and Henderson (1961), and more recent works by French (1985) and Julien (2002)]. These courses and texts assume a foundation in fluid mechanics and differential equations, devote considerable attention to the aspects of flow involved in the design of structures, and generally provide only limited discussion of the geomorphic and other more “holistic” aspects of natural streams. By contrast, the usual curricula for earth, environmental, and natural resource sciences do not provide a thorough systematic introduction to the mechanics of river flows, despite its importance as a basis for understanding hydrologic processes, geomorphology, erosion, sediment transport and deposition, water supply and quality, habitat management, and flood hazards.
