This book has its roots in a series of collaborations in the last decade at the interface between statistical physics and cosmology. The specific problem which initiated this research was the study of the clustering properties of galaxies as revealed by large redshift surveys, a context in which concepts of modern statistical physics (e.g. scale-invariance, fractality..) find ready application. In recent years we have considerably broadened the range of problems in cosmology which we have addressed, treating in particular more theoretical issues about the statistical properties of standard cosmological models. What is common to all this research, however, is that it is informed by a perspective and methodology which is that of statistical physics. We can say that, beyond its specific scientific content, this book has an underlying thesis: such interdisciplinary research is an exciting playground for statistical physics, and one which can bring new and useful insights into cosmology. The book does not represent a final point, but in our view, a marker in the development of this kind of research, which we believe can go very much further in the future. Indeed as we complete this book, new developments - which unfortunately we have not been able to include here - have beenmade on some of the themes described here. Our focus in this book is on the problem of structure in cosmology. Our aim is to elucidate what the principal concepts of modern statistical physics are in this context, and then to illustrate their application to specific aspects of this problem.

Magnetism and magnetic phenomena surround us. Magnetic materials pervade our lives far beyond just compasses and common household magnets. Magnetic materials and magnetism are used inconspicuously in many complex gadgets, ranging from magnetic recording disks and cellular phones, to magnetic resonance imaging instruments and spintronic devices. New characterization techniques help us to understand the fascinating behavior of newly discovered magnetic materials, while new materials stimulate the further development of novel methods. We understand the physical and chemical behaviors of materials through directly or indirectly measuring a material's structure and properties. The field of structural characterization is often too wide; identifLing the most appropriate method to employ can be difficult. One objective of this book is to introduce the reader to various modem techniques in characterizing magnetic materials at different length scales, focusing on neutron, x-ray, electron, and laser-light scattering as well as proximal probes, their principles, applicability, limitations, and relationship to competing methods.

The precisely controlled preparation of samples is of paramount importance in both solid-state physics and materials science. In addition to its success as a device production technology, molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE) is probably the most important method in this field, since it allows the growth of crystalline layer combinations with accurate dimensional control down to the atomic level. Hydraulic structures and river works are essential for the development of countries. This is more significant in the millennium development goals owing to scarcity of water for the ever-increasing population of the world. The objective of this conference is to bring together researchers and practitioners to exchange views and experiences on hydraulics of structures associated with rivers and dams. It is further hoped and anticipated that this would lead to a state of the art of the current practice to improve design of hydraulicstructures especially in developing countries. Not overlooking the ever growing need for more enhanced and profound non-structural approaches in water resources management issues, it is deliberated that through such a conference the wealth of knowledge and experience in the field would be shared and the structural aspect of water resources management is given its deserved share in sustainable development of infra-structure. In this respect it is hoped that series of specialised conferences of this nature will continue to be held in future. Hydraulic researchers had been leading air-water flow studies until the mid-1950s. Since progresses have been dominated by multiphase flow experts despite the relevance of “white water” phenomena to hydraulic engineering. In this lecture the writer reviews the basic mechanisms of air entrainment: singular aeration and interfacial entrainment. The relevant instrumentation and data processing technique are detailed. Later recent progresses in unsteady flow measurements and in seawater are discussed.

This book is an outgrowth of a previous handbook article on the history of shock waves. While preparing the manuscript for this handbook, it quickly became apparent that this field of enormous breadth could not be adequately treated without also including the evolution of research into percussion and explosion. Since the limited space available in the handbook confined the historical perspectives to a rather limited period of time (1759–1945), the author conceived the idea of providing readers interested in history with a more detailed description of this complex field of physics and engineering, in particular by (i) covering the period beginning from prehistoric to present times; (ii) including biographical sketches of eminent researchers; and (iii) illustrating the milestones using a picture gallery of authentic illustrations. The aim of this volume is to provide an introduction to Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (LQCD) for readers that are non-specialists in the field. In particular, we have in mind advanced undergraduates and graduate students — both theorists and experimentalists — who have a background in nuclear and/or particle physics. Nothing is more exciting to a scientist than realizing that his/her areas of expertise are developing and that the state-of-the-knowledge yesterday is outdated today. The distinguished philosopher Ernst Mach first reported the phenomenon of shock wave reflection over 125 years ago in 1878. The study of this fascinating phenomenon was then abandoned for a period of about 60 years until Professors John von Neumann and Bleakney initiated its investigation in the early 1940s. Under their supervision, 15 years of intensive research related to various aspects of the reflection of shock waves in pseudosteady flows were carried out. It was during this period that the four basic shock wave reflection configurations, regular, single-Mach, transitional-Mach and double-Mach reflections, were discovered. Then, for a period of about 10 years from the mid-1950s until the mid-1960s, the investigation of the reflection phenomenon of shock waves was kept on a low flame all over the world (e.g. Australia, Japan, Canada, USA, USSR, etc.) until Professor Tatyana Bazhenova from the USSR, Professor Irvine Israel Glass from Canada, and Professor Roy Henderson from Australia re-initiated the study of this and related phenomena.

Why does someone write a book about Tungsten? There are several reasons and precedents for this, the most important of which is that the last book on tungsten was written more than 20 years ago, in 1977, by St. W. H. Yih and Ch T. Wang. During the intervening period there have been many new scientific and technological developments and innovations, so it was not only our opinion but the view of many other members of the "tungsten family" that it was time to start writing a new book about tungsten. Preparations of the new book began in 1994. Further impetus to the project was provided by the realization that in spite of this new knowledge having been presented at seminars or published in the technical press, a general acknowledgement of it by the majority of technicians and scientists is still far from being realized. It is our hope that this book will significantly contribute to a broader acceptance of recent scientific and technological innovations.

Mixing may be thought of as the operation by which a system evolves from one state of simplicity (initial segregation) to another state of simplicity (complete uniformity). Between these two extremes, complex patterns emerge and die. Questions naturally arise-- how can the geometry of complex patterns be characterised, what is the time scale of the process, what structures are involved in the flow? This volume, comprising the proceedings of the NATO ASI on Mixing, attempts to address these questions from the approaches of geometry, kinetics and structure. The ASI which brought together diverse communities with a common interest in the problem of mixing, now provides us with a comprehensive work on the problem of mixing.
