For the first time in one set of books, coherent-domain optical methods are discussed in the framework of various applications, which are characterized by a strong light scattering. A few chapters describe basic research containing the updated results on coherent and polarized light non-destructive interactions with a scattering medium, in particular, diffraction, interference, and speckle formation at multiple scattering. These chapters allow for understanding coherent-domain diagnostic techniques presented in later chapters. A large portion of Volume I is dedicated to analysis of various aspects of optical coherence tomography (OCT) - a very new and growing field of coherent optics. Two chapters on laser scanning confocal microscopy give insight to recent extraordinary results on in vivo imaging and compare the possibilities and achievements of confocol, excitation multiphoton, and OCT microscopy. This two volume reference contains descriptions of holography, interferometry and optical heterodyning techniques in their application for diagnostics of turbid materials. The most prospective methods of coherent and polarization optical imaging and spectroscopy, including polarization-sensitive optical coherent tomography, polarization diffusion wave spectroscopy, and elastic and quasi-elastic light scattering spectroscopies and image techniques, are presented.

Non-Newtonian fluids form an extremely wide class of different materials, whose only common features are fluidity and a failure to obey Newton's law of friction. It is therefore impossible to deal with the subject of non-Newtonian fluid mechanics unless one of two choices is made: the analysis is either restricted to a specific class of fluids sharing a common form of mechanical behavior, or is restricted to only the principles of non-Newtonian fluid mechanics, i.e., to that body of knowledge which is supposedly applicable to all fluids. In this book we have adhered to the second choice, and only in the last two chapters have we attempted to hint at methods of approach that could be chosen for the solution of actual problems relative to specific materials.

The rapid acceptance of fibre optics technology in commercial systems applications has brought forward an increased need for guided wave optical components (passive and active) which permit coupling, multiplexing and demultiplexing, switching and distributing of light signals propagating in optical waveguides. Optical components such as light sources fibre couplers, splices, connectors, directional couplers, multiplexers, switches and modulators are essential elements for transmission and sensing systems. Splices and connectors between fibres are important because splice losses remain a factor of primary importance in existing and future fibre optics network design. In the search for simplicity, all-fibre components associated with optical functions have recently received considerable attention, mainly because of the strong potential benefits such components may play in the field of light wave technology, including optical fibre communications, opto-electronic signal processing and optical fibre sensing. Devices constructed from optical fibres may have advantages such as low insertion loss due to circular symmetry.

Many of us who are involved in teaching a special-topic graduate course may have the experience that it is difficult to find suitable references, especially reference materials put together in a suitable text format. Presently, several excellent book series exist and they have served the scientific community well in reviewing new developments in physical chemistry and chemical physics. However, these existing series publish mostly monographs consisting of review chapters of unrelated subjects. The modern development of theoretical and experimental research has become highly specialized. Even in a small subfield, experimental or theoretical, few reviewers are capable of giving an in-depth review with good balance in various new developments. A thorough and more useful review should consist of chapters written by specialists covering all aspects of the field. This book series is established with these needs in mind.
