The idea behind this book originated at a meeting held in Caramulo in Portugal in September 2003. The participants agreed that, though the field of natural dynamos (planetary, stellar and galactic) was rapidly evolving and attracting the interest of researchers in other branches of fluid mechanics, there was no comprehensive introductory book for researchers or graduate students entering this research area. The organisers therefore decided to take advantage of the broad-based knowledge of the invited lecturers at the conference to assemble a “multi-authored monograph”. Despite the obvious contradiction in this phrase, it does reflect the spirit in which this book was prepared. While each section of the book was written by specialists in different aspects of this subject, a concerted effort has been made to provide a unified presentation, which develops concepts in a coherent order and, where feasible, uses consistent notation.

Solid-state systems are frequently classified according to their physical, structural or chemical properties. Such schemes are extremely helpful since properties related to any such classification are typically known and facilitate identifying solids with special material classes. The best-known examples of these schemes are conductivity or resistivitymeasurements bymeans of whichmetals are easily distinguishable from insulators. However, frequently clear-cut decisions between material classes are not possible, since anisotropy, chemical composition, binding forces and local effects wash out distinct properties and lead to competition or coexistence. Such unresolved situations are especially typical for transitionmetal oxides that exhibit a variety of ground-state properties in a fascinating way. Here chemical substitution, doping, pressure or temperature effects easily influence the physical properties and may, for instance, induce metal/insulator, antiferromagnet/ ferromagnet, insulator/superconductor transitions. This situation is analogous to perovskite ferroelectrics and hydrogen-bonded ferroelectrics, where ferroelectric/antiferroelectric transitions occur with chemical substitutions of one of the constituent sublattices. In addition, glass-like states (dipolar glasses) are observed and relaxor ferroelectricity with a large potential for applicationfrequently occurs.

This monograph is a comprehensive presentation of state-of-the-art methodologies that can dramatically enhance the efficiency of the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) technique, the most popular electromagnetic field solver of the time-domain form of Maxwell’s equations. These methodologies are aimed at optimally tailoring the computational resources needed for the wideband simulation of microwave and optical structures to their geometry, as well as the nature of the field solutions they support. That is achieved by the development of robust “adaptive meshing” approaches, which amount to varying the total number of unknown field quantities in the course of the simulation to adapt to temporally or spatially localized field features. While mesh adaptation is an extremely desirable FDTD feature, known to reduce simulation times by orders of magnitude, it is not always robust. The specific techniques presented in this book are characterized by stability and robustness. Therefore, they are excellent computer analysis and design (CAD) tools.

The spontaneous disintegration of long-lived, naturally occurring isotopes provides one source of information on nuclei. However, only a limited number of nuclei are accessible for study by this natural process and then only under a narrow range of circumstances. On the other hand, nuclear reactigns can be induced in the myriad of pairwise combinations provided by stable or long-lived nuclei and over the wide range of energies provided by the accelerators in the physics laboratories of the world. Reactions therefore provide the greatest volume and widest range of nuclear data. The energy loss of a beam particle can be directly interpreted as an excitation energy in the target nucleus. Usually, however, the data acquire meaning for the structure of nuclei only after they have been interpreted through a reaction theory. The synthesis of such accumulated information into a coherent theory of the nucleus is the main subject of nuclear physics. There are a number of volumes on nuclear structure that review this ngoing process.

When considering an input-output system such as an aircraft subjected to stochastic atmospheric turbulence, a major problem emerges. During flight tests, no practical difficulty arises measuring the aircraft-system's outputs, such as the angle-of-attack, the pitch-angle, the roll-angle, etc. However, a huge problem arises when the input to the aircraft-system is considered; this input is stochastic atmospheric turbulence in this thesis. Currently, it still remains extremely difficult to identify the entire flowfield around an aircraft's geometry subjected to a turbulent field of flow; an infinite amount of sensors would be required to identify the atmospheric turbulence velocity component's distribution (the input) over it. As a consequence, it is difficult, if not impossible, to identify atmospheric turbulence models from flight tests.

Interest in the Earth’s climate is at an all–time high, due in large part to concerns that it may be changing to a degree that will soon adversely affect the habitability of the planet. This realization coincides with rapid improvements inthe tools needed to study and understand the physical processes that produce and maintain the climate, including remote–sensing instruments and observing platforms in space, and fast computers and sophisticated algorithms to analyse large amounts of data and to run advanced theoretical models. The radiation that reaches the Earth from the Sun and its interaction with the Earth’s atmosphere plays a critical role in determining the climatic conditions that prevail over the globe. The Earth’s surface–radiation budget drives the water content of the atmosphere and with it the dominant component of the natural greenhouse effect that serves to maintain the benign climate on our planet. Variations in the incoming solar radiation and in the composition andcloud content of the atmosphere and ice cover of the surface result in climatic variability on timescales of billions of years to less than a century. Recently, human activity has begun to modify the Earth’s climate, through emissions of greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide and methane, and of aerosols, that alter the radiative balance and generally warm the planet, but can also cool it depending on the exact circumstances.
