Nowadays, propellants, explosives and pyrotechnics are composed mainly of particulate energetic materials. These are gaining in importance as a way to optimize the performance, burning behavior, stability, detonation properties, processing characteristics and, above all, the low sensitivity of these systems. By varying the characteristic profile of these materials, product design provides for particulate components specially optimized for the application in question. Well-known solid formation processes are often used to create particles of energetic materials, such as crystallization or precipitation, comminution or atomization. Although there is a certain amount of information available about these processes for particle syntheses or processing, there is currently a lack of detailed comprehension in some points, which is needed to be able to completely control the particle formation process or to make reliable predictions about the profile required by the user for the particles so created. Vital questions and tasks remaining for particle technology of energetic materials are the comprehensive characterization of particulate components, the experimental determination of the kinetics of particle formation processes, the influence of the manufacturing process on important particle characteristics, such as particle size distribution, morphology or polymorphy, the simulation and modeling of particle formation processes and particulate materials, as well as the creation of low-defect particles with regard to the sensitivity of propellants and explosives. This book is targeted at those working in industry, government or R&D, and involved in the fascinating field of energetic or other special materials. It will hopefully contribute to summarizing our current level of knowledge.

This book is intended to provide researchers and graduate students with a clear and thorough presentation of the recent advances in continuum damage mechanics for metals and metal matrix composites. Emphasis is placed on the theoretical formulation of the different constitutive models in this area. However, sections are added in the book to demonstrate the applications of the theory. A chapter is also included on experimental investigations and comparisons with theoretical predictions. In addition, some sections contain new material that does not appear before in the literature. Although the book covers damage mechanics in metals, the presentation is very minimal and many approaches to this topic are only briefly presented. This is mainly because there are other books that give a more thorough and adequate exposition to this subject. However the book goes in more details into the subject of damage mechanics in metal matrix composites. The primary reason for this is that no such book currently exists on this topic. Most of the available books that were published recently on this topic are edited books. This is the first book that attempts to bring together continuum damage mechanics and metal matrix composites in a single and unified volume. Therefore, a substantial part of the material reflects the authors' own work in this area, but other approaches are presented when they are clearly relevant to the topic under discussion.

This Handbook on the Properties of Magnetically Ordered Substances, Ferromagnetic Materials, is intended as a comprehensive work of reference and textbook at the same time. As such it aims to encompass the achievements both of earlier compilations of tables and of earlier monographs. In fact, one aim of those who have helped to prepare this work has been to produce a worthy successor to Bozorth's classical and monomental book on Ferromagnetism, published some 30 years ago. This older book contained a mass of information, some of which is still valuable and which has been used very widely as a work of reference. It also contained in its text a remarkably broad converage of the scientific and technological background.

Gauge Field theories have had a great impact in modern theoretical physics, as they keep internal symmetries and can account for important physical phenomena such as: spontaneous symmetry breaking, the quantum Hall effect, charge fractionalization, superconductivity, and supergravity. In these notes, we focus on specific examples of gauge field theories which admit a selfdual structure when the physical parameters satisfy a “critical” coupling condition that typically identifies a transition between different regimes. The selfdual regime is characterized by the presence of “special” soliton-type solutions corresponding to minimizers of the energy within certain constraints of “topological” nature. Such solutions, known as selfdual solutions, satisfy a set of first-order (selfdual) equations that furnish a “factorization” for the second-order gauge field equations. Furthermore, each class of “topologically equivalent” selfdual solutions form the space of moduli, whose characterization is one of the main objectives in gauge theory.

Plasma, sometimes called the fourth state of matter, is a multifaceted substance which poses a variety of challenges. Plasma physics deals with the complex interaction of many charged particles with external or self-generated electromagnetic fields. This volume is a collection of a selected number of articles based on presentations at the 2005 L’Aquila (Italy) Summer School on the topic of “Hydrologic Modeling and Water Cycle: Coupling of the Atmosphere and Hydrological Models”. The primary focus of this volume is on hydrologic modeling and their data requirements, especially precipitation. As the field of hydrologic modeling is experiencing rapid development and transition to application of distributed models, many challenges including overcoming the requirements of compatible observations of inputs and outputs must be addressed. A number of papers address the recent advances in the State-of-the-art distributed precipitation estimation from satellites. A number of articles address the issues related to the data merging and use of geo-statistical techniques for addressing data limitations at spatial resolutions to capture the heterogeneity of physical processes. The participants at the School came from diverse backgrounds and the level of interest and active involvement in the discussions clearly demonstrated the importance the scientific community places on challenges related to the coupling of atmospheric and hydrologic models. Along with my colleagues Dr. Erika Coppola and Dr. Kuolin Hsu, co-directors of the School, we greatly appreciate the invited lectures and all the participants. The members of the local organizing committee, Drs Barbara Tomassetti; Marco Verdecchia and Guido Visconti were instrumental in the success of the school and their contributions, both scientifically and organizationally are much appreciated.

Kinematics is a branch of dynamics that studies aspects of motion apart from considerations of masses and forces. Essentially, Kinematics is a collection of vector/matrix methods to describe positions, velocities and accelerations of particles and rigid bodies, as viewed from various reference frames. Information about a material can be gathered from its interaction with electromagnetic waves. The information may be stored in the amplitude, the phase, the polarisation, the angular distribution of energy transportation or the spectral characteristics. When retrieved from the wave, certain material properties may thus be determined indirectly. Compared on the one hand to direct material analysis, an indirect method requires calibration and is prone to interference from undesired sources. On the other hand, however, it permits the determination of features inaccessible by direct methods, such as non-destructive material interrogation, high measurement speed, or deep penetration depth. However, being a physical method, the use of electromagnetic waves is still handicapped by the lack of acceptance by many chemists, who are used to applying direct approaches.
