The emergence and rapid growth of the microelectronic industry, and its concomitant drive for the miniaturization of electronic devices, together with the optical fiber telecommunication industry and its need to couple light in and out of single mode waveguides, has created in their wake, a new area of optics termed "micro-optics". What is meant by this term is optical elements of dimension of a millimeter or smaller. Primarily, this has meant lenses, or elements that act as lenses, as well as structures that redirect, polarize, and otherwise alter some state or direction of light.

The problem of cosmic ray (CR) geomagnetic effects came to the fore at the beginning of the 1930s after the famous expeditions by J. Clay onboard ship (Slamat) between the Netherlands and Java using an ionization chamber. Many CR latitude expeditions were organized by the famous scientists and Nobel Laureates R. Millikan and A. Compton. From the obtained latitude curves it follows that CRs cannot be gamma rays (as many scientists thought at that time), but must be charged particles. From measurements of azimuthally geomagnetic effect at that time it also followed that these charged particles must be mostly positive

Djebbar Tiab is the Senior Professor of Petroleum Engineering at the University of Oklahoma, and Petroleum Engineering consultant. He received his B.Sc. (May 1974) and M.Sc. (May 1975) degrees from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, and his Ph.D. degree (July 1976) from the University of Oklahoma-all in petroleum engineering. He is the Director of the University of Oklahoma Graduate Program in Petroleum Engineering in Algeria. At the University of Oklahoma, he taught fifteen different petroleum and general engineering courses including: well test analysis, petrophysics, oil reservoir engineering, natural gas engineering, and properties of reservoir fluids. Dr. Tiab has consulted for a number of oil companies and offered training programs in petroleum engineering in the USA and overseas. He worked for over two years in the oilfields of Algeria for Alcore, S.A., an association of Sonatrach and Core Laboratories. He has also worked and consulted for Core Laboratories and Western Atlas in Houston, Texas, for four years as a Senior Reservoir Engineer Advisor.

Earthquake dynamics is one of the most pluridisciplinary endeavors in Earth Science, encompassing most disciplines in Geology, Geophysics, Rock Mechanics, and Fracture Mechanics. These studies range from field observations of faults and seismic ruptures through experimental rupture mechanics, fracture mechanics, and seismic radiation from earthquake faulting. Such a broad field attracts researchers from many horizons, using different scientific approaches and diverse technical experiences. The collection of papers selected by Eiichi Fukuyama and his colleagues is a very ample cross-section of these different approaches, ranging from field observations of faulting— both recent and old—to the most advanced techniques for simulating seismic ruptures in the laboratory and in computers, as well as the use of seismic data to constrain these models. These different approaches are required in order to understand and eventually use this information for the scientific prediction of ground motion and, perhaps one day, predicting earthquakes.

Recent years have seen great progress in the field of cosmic magnetic fields, both in the available observational data and in the theoretical interpretations. Now we have extensive data on magnetic fields in virtually all types of cosmic objects: the Earth, the Sun, the Milky Way, out to magnetic fields in the most distant reaches of the Universe. The first detection of a magnetic field outside the Earth was made by G.E. Hale, who made optical Zeeman effect observations of magnetic fields in the Sun, nearly 100 years ago. The detection of the Zeeman effect in stars by H.W. Babcock followed some 40 years later. Optical starlight polarization observations were made in 1949 and, when combined with the DavisGreenstein effect interpretation, suggested that magnetic fields were present in our Milky Way. Radio polarization measurements confirmed this deduction in 1962.

This book gives a comprehensive and connected account of all aspects of mantle convection within the Earth, the terrestrial planets, the Moon, and the Galilean satellites of Jupiter. Convection is the most important process in the mantle, and it sets the pace for the evolution of the Earth as a whole. It controls the distribution of land and water on geologic time scales, and its influences range from the Earth’s climate system, cycles of glaciation, and biological evolution to the formation of mineral and hydrocarbon resources. Because mantle convection is the primary mechanism for the transport of heat from the Earth’s deep interior to its surface, it is the underlying cause of plate tectonics, formation and drift of continents, volcanism, earthquakes, and mountain building processes. It also shapes the gravitational and magnetic fields of the Earth. Mantle convection plays similar, but not identical, roles in the other planets and satellites.

In October 2005 a group of approximately 120 experts on solar and space physics and the effects of radiation on humans and spacecraft met for a workshop at the Wintergreen conference facilities near Charlottesville, Virginia. This workshop followed other efforts by solar and space physics scientists to address ways in which their work could be focused on support for NASA’s Vision for Space Exploration (see Box P.1). These earlier meetings included a RHESSI-SOHO-TRACE Workshop in December 2004 that had recommended a meeting near Washington, D.C., in the fall of 2005 to bring together NASA Exploration operations and engineering personnel and scientists. It also followed a workshop organized by NASA’s Living With a Star (LWS) program, held on April 5-6, 2004, in Washington, D.C., to examine existing and planned LWS science missions that contribute to the enabling of proposed human lunar and Mars missions. At nearly the same time, the Committee on Solar and Space Physics (CSSP) of the National Research Council’s (NRC’s) Space Studies Board independently began planning for a study on space environmental hazards. The CSSP agreed to cosponsor the workshop and to prepare this NRC workshop report.

What form should one use to enhance to the utmost the brilliance, harmony and depth of sound from a symphony orchestra? Is there perhaps an ideal form on acoustics grounds for a drama theatre for Shakespeare’s plays? Such questions must have inspired many of the more original solutions to the auditorium problem. A particularly appealing approach for instance, especially for those sensitive to the charms of classical architecture, is that certain ratios of proportion are propitious. The argument runs that since our ears appreciate harmony and harmony is based on simple proportions, so buildings to support harmony should likewise be built with favourable ratios of proportion. Sadly this charming argument is fallacious since the actual dimensions are also relevant. This means that a concert hall with preferred proportions would only be suitable for one musical key, a concert hall in C perhaps? However there is the further point that the dimensions of auditoria are in any case too large for such considerations to be significant; we can fortunately design halls for all keys.
