The domestic microwave oven was a serendipitous invention. Percy Spencer was working for Raytheon, a company very involved with radar during World War II, when he noticed the heat generated by a radar antenna. In 1947 an appliance called a Radarange appeared on the market for food processing. The first kitchen microwave oven was introduced by Tappan in 1955. Sales of inexpensive domestic ovens now total many billions of dollars (euros) annually. Numerous other uses of microwaves have been discovered in the recent years – essentially drying of different types of material (paper, rubber, tobacco, leather . . .), treatment of elastomers and vulcanization, extraction, polymerization, and many applications in the food-processing industry.

The field of Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) or Advanced Oxidation Technologies (AOTs) is of relatively recent vintage. However, AOPs/AOTs are proving to be important contributions to the treatment of water and air to remove harmful and toxic contaminants. Thus, it is gratifying to see this very comprehensive and authoritative treatise appear covering all aspects of AOPs/AOTs. These range from the treatment of industrial wastewaters, drinking water (both contaminant removal and disinfection), ultrapure water to the purification and deodorizing of air. This book presents the results of complex experimental and theoretical studies of the characteristics of water activated by external action. The studied samples of activatedwater were obtained with the help of Molecular Resonance Effect Technology (MRET). We discuss the results of detailed studies of mechanical, electrodynamic, optical, and other characteristics of activated water itself and various physical phenomena associated with its application. About half of the book is devoted to the comprehensive studies of the specific features of the influence of activated water on various biological objects (plants, microorganisms, animals). These investigations were carried out from year 2004 to 2008 at several scientific institutes and universities of Ukraine, Russia, and USA, with participation from the authors of the book.

This book fills a gap in our knowledge of an intensively developing field of science: the chemistry and physics of macromolecular metal complexes (MMCs). This branch of science has appeared at the intersection of macromolecular, organometallic, physical and catalytic chemistry, and physics. On the one hand, it is difficult to generalize numerous data on MMCs because of the need to coordinate the efforts of specialists whose interests are primarily in specific fields of chemistry. Researchers in organic and high molecular branches of chemistry deal with syntheses of metal complexes and metals in macromolecules, whereas specialists in physical chemistry work on problems of structure, the nature of bonds and the catalytic properties of MMCs. On the other hand, as the contents of this book show, the field of MMCs possesses all the features typical of an independent branch of chemistry that operates with specific objects and its own construction principles and methodology. In general, the stage of accumulation of experimental data is almost complete.

The synthetic diamonds developed by industrial organizations in the 1950’s and 1960’s using a combination of high-pressure, hightemperature (HPHT) techniques are used primarily in cutting, grinding and polishing applications. However, a variety of potential applications for this material require thin films and coatings which cannot be produced by these methods. The results of much smaller efforts, simultaneous with the HPHT studies, in the United States and Russia and concerned both with the kinetics of the pyrolysis of various hydrocarbon-hydrogen mixtures and with the mechanisms of nucleation and growth of diamond on diamond seeds at low pressures were considered to be only of “academic” interest. However, the publication of micrographs of highly faceted and continuous diamond films, and confirming analytical data, in the Russian and, subsequently, in the Japanese scientific literature in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s catalyzed substantial activity in this field. This resulted in the development and use of a variety of deposition and characterization techniques to achieve and study diamond films and coatings.

The second edition of this handbook has required a complete revision of the major part of the book. The reason is not only new developments in technology and application, but also the identification of vital factors in the protection system. Developments in standards and regulations also had to be taken into account. Electrochemical corrosion and electrochemical corrosion protection have the same bases. These and the uniform terminology given in the DIN manual 219 form the scientific basis for this handbook. Descriptions of new corrosion systems and increased questions concerning the use of potential and current distribution as well as the influence of high tension have improved our understanding and favor new applications, even if less useful parts of the previous tests have had to be omitted. There are new developments in 7/?-free potential measurements, intensive measuring techniques, and computer-controlled evaluation data. Only interactions between corrosion and polarization are described in dealing with the properties of coatings for passive corrosion protection.

The primary goal of this research and development effort was the utilization of renewable (non-petroleum-based) raw materials such as soybean oil in the next generation of waterborne surface coatings. Vegetable oil-based coatings are renewable natural resources, and they are “green technology” materials that are environmentally friendly in the workplace and home. These organic solvent-free coatings are commercially economical from both a manufacturing and a raw materials availability viewpoint, and they reduce the dependency on petroleum products and unpredictable erratic prices.
