The process of biomineralization is based on the formation of inorganic crystals, and is strongly controlled by organic molecules which are themselves controlled by cells. As a chemist, I was familiar with the first part of this story, but I had much to learn about biomolecules, the different cell types, and also the clinical treatments of diseases. Fortunately, in Hamburg, as well as in the subsequent institutions where I worked – at Bochum and Essen – I met people from the field of medicine who were interested in conducting joint studies. When all parties had learned to communicate – due to the different vocabulary of their disciplines – many fruitful collaborations developed, and in this respect I am deeply indebted to my colleagues (listed in alphabetical order), Prof. M. Electrochemistry, long-time corner stone for fundamental chemistry and physics, now plays an important role in many areas of applied science and technology. Symmetry is central to spectroscopy, chemical bonding theory and many other aspects of the molecular sciences. The idea of this book is to introduce the topic in a graduated way, from molecular structure, through point groups, leading into the powerful tools that group theory provides. Example models and applications are used at all stages to show how the sometimes abstract ideas are relevant to practical problems. It is designed to be a useful companion at all levels of undergraduate study and beyond. Chapters 1 and 2 introduce the ideas of symmetry elements and operations for the description of molecular geometry; this sets up the required symbols through examples of particular molecules. Chapter 3 looks from a slightly different perspective, laying out all the sets of operations that are contained in the common point groups and discussing why only certain sets are possible. For all three chapters Appendices 1, 2 and 4 give some paper models that can be used for visualization of the shapes that are not easily built using a molecular modeling kit. These paper models will also be available from the website. The reader interested in the applications of symmetry, without too much detail of the background, may wish to skip over Chapter 3 on the first reading. Chapters 4 and 5 introduce the concepts of group theory, which makes symmetry indispensible for understanding many areas of chemistry. This book concentrates on applications in vibrational spectroscopy and molecular orbital theory and so illustrative examples are drawn from these areas.

In the course of our individual research programs, we have had occasion to utilize hetero Diels-Alder reactions as pivotal steps in natural product total syntheses. It became clear to us during the early stages of our work that this type of cycloaddition, although a potentially powerful synthetic tool, had found relatively little general use. Moreover, it was also evident that reviews on various aspects of this chemistry were often out-of-date or nonexistent. In response to this situation, we have written several journal reviews on different facets of hetero Diels-Alder methodology during the past few years. With an apparent increase in the appreciation of the value of [4 + 21 cycloadditions in heterocyclic synthesis, we felt it was appropriate to write this monograph.

In the space of 10 years, the number of alkaloids isolated from this family has increased from the seven reported by Popelak and Lettenbauer (15) in their earlier brief review to more than 25 bases which have fully characterized structures. Chlorine is an element of the halogen family, but it is never found uncombined in nature. It is estimated to account for 0.15 percent of the earth's crust in the form of soluble chlorides, such as common salt (NaCl), carnallite (KMgCl3 · 6H2O), and sylvite (KCl). In nature, therefore, it exists only as the negative chloride ion with a valence of -1.
