Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) has developed rapidly in recent years as a method to produce metal films for a variety of applications in the electronics and coatings industries. Originally, it was thought that CVD of all materials was limited by incorporation of carbon and, as a result, the primary applications of CVD would be in the coatings industry where purity is often not a major concern. However, advances in CVD of semiconductors showed that films with purities meeting or exceeding all other deposition techniques and with abrupt interfaces can be created. Historically, the development of the CVD of metals has lagged behind CVD of compound semiconductors. However, because of the dramatic increase in effort in CVD of metals driven primarily by the microelectronics industry, this situation has improved and high-purity films of a wide variety of metals can now be deposited conformally at low temperatures. Success stories include CVD of tungsten and more recently of A1 and Cu films, which are now of sufficient quality to be suitable for applications in the microelectronics industry.

In our everyday life we are confronted with different aspects of emulsions—-either water- or oil-continuous—- with varying amounts of oil, fat, and water. Margarine, butter, milk, and dressings all represent central food emulsions. In specific cases involving food emulsions, it is beneficial for the customer to control the stability of the product, particularly with regard to flocculation, sedimentation/ creaming, and coalescence. In other branches of industry, emulsion stability may cause severe problems for the entire process. The most well-known examples are crude-oil-based emulsions, wastewater emulsions, etc. The multiplicity of industrial applications of emulsions has catalyzed a better fundamental understanding of these dispersed systems. The academic research has been successfully interfaced to practical concerns in order to facilitate the solutions to emulsion problems.

Adsorption, Ion Exchange and Catalysis is essentially a mixture of environmental science and chemical reactor engineering. More specifically, three important heterogeneous processes, namely, adsorption, ion exchange and catalysis, are analysed, from fundamental kinetics to reactor design with emphasis on their environmental applications. Cosmochemistry provides critical insights into the workings of our local star and its companions throughout the galaxy, the origin and timing of our solar system’s birth, and the complex reactions inside planetesimals and planets (including our own) as they evolve. Much of the database of cosmochemistry comes from laboratory analyses of elements and isotopes in our modest collections of extraterrestrial samples. A growing part of the cosmochemistry database is gleaned from remote sensing and in situ measurements by spacecraft instruments, which provide chemical analyses and geologic context for other planets, their moons, asteroids, and comets. Because the samples analyzed by cosmochemists are typically so small and valuable, or must be analyzed on bodies many millions of miles distant, this discipline leads in the development of new analytical technologies for use in the laboratory or flown on spacecraft missions. These technologies then spread to geochemistry and other fields where precise analyses of small samples are important.

Proteins are unique among the biological macromolecules and have attracted active interest from various disciplines. Biologists tend to put the emphasis on the functional role of proteins. The pioneering work in high pressure protein research is that of Bridgman who observed that a pressure of several 100 MPa will give egg white an outlook similar, but not identical, to that of a cooked egg [1]. Since Bridgman worked on various pure substances, he may not have realized that the pressure effect on egg white has basically to do with an aqueous solution of a protein where water plays a vital role.

This report has attempted to cover all of the coatings and inks products used in food contact scenarios. Hence, direct and non-direct contact situations are included throughout the food chain, e.g., harvesting, processing, transportation, packaging and cooking. In practice, this encompasses an extremely wide range of polymer systems and formulations, and an emphasis has been placed on coatings and inks used in food packaging, as this is usually regarded as representing the most important application category with respect to the potential for migration to occur. With respect to food packaging, all three of the major material classes are covered, i.e., metal, paper and board, and plastic. In addition to a thorough introduction of the polymers and additives that are used to produce coatings and inks, there are also chapters covering the regulation of these materials, the migration and analytical tests that are performed on them to assess their suitability for food contact applications, the migration data that have been published, and the areas in the field that are receiving the most attention for research and development.
