This text is an outgrowth or organized compilation of the notes the authors have used to teach an introductory course on the viscoelasticity of polymers for more than thirty years for the senior author and about fifteen years for the junior author. Originally, the course was taught only to graduate students but in recent years an effort has been made to teach a modification of the course to senior level mechanical engineering students. The authors have long held the view that the lack of knowledge of the fundamental aspects of the time and temperature behavior of polymer materials is a serious shortcoming in undergraduate as well as graduate engineering education.

Group Ill-Nitrides semiconductor materials, including GaN, InN, A1N, InGaN, AlGaN and AlInGaN, i.e. (Al, In, Ga)N, are excellent semiconductors, covering the spectral range from UV to visible and to infrared, with unique properties very suitable for modern electronic and optoelectronic applications. Remarkable breakthroughs have been achieved in recent years for research and development (R&D) in these materials and devices, such as high-power and high-brightness blue-green-white light emitting diodes (LEDs) and blue laser diodes (LDs) as well as other optoelectronics and electronics devices and applications. III-Nitrides-based industry is forming up and new economic developments from these materials are promising. It is expected that III Nitrides- based LEDs might replace the traditional light bulbs to realize a revolution in lightings and change the entire human life in this century, similar to Edison's invention of the electric light bulb more than one hundred years ago.

Few metals, particularly those in common technological applications, are stable when exposed to the atmosphere at both high and low temperatures. Consequently, most metals in service today are subject to deterioration either by corrosion at room temperature or by oxidation at high temperature. The degree of corrosion varies widely. Some metals, such as iron, will rust and oxidize very rapidly whereas other metals, such as nickel and chromium, are attacked relatively slowly. It will be seen that the nature of the surface layers produced on the metal plays a major role in the behaviour of these materials in aggressive atmospheres.

Terrorists have used toxic chemicals and high-powered explosives on many occasions. WMDs “are capable of a high order of destruction and/or of being used in such a manner as to destroy large numbers of people. Weapons of mass destruction can be high explosives or nuclear, biological, chemical, and radiological weapons, but exclude the means of transporting or propelling the weapon where such means is a separable and divisible part of the weapon. Among weapons of massive destruction, besides high explosives, are the chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons” ( Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms , U.S. Department of Defense, Joint Publication, 2002). Use of WMDs, such as nuclear, biological, or chemical weapons by terrorists toward civilian targets, will cause large numbers of casualties.

Volume 19 in the EPR Specialist Periodical Report series again aims to reflect major research advances in relevant understanding and applications of the technique during 2002 and 2003. Self-organization of inorganic nanocrystals opens a new and challenging area in nanotechnology [1, 2]. We already know that nanomaterials are a new generation of advanced materials that are expected to exhibit unusual chemical and physical properties, different from those of either the bulk materials or isolated nanocrystals [3–5]. Engineering of nanophase materials and devices is of great interest in several domains such as electronics, semiconductors, optics, catalysis, and magnetism. During the past decade, nanocrystal research has been focused on two major properties of finite-size materials: quantum size effects and surface/interface effects [6, 7]. The thermodynamic properties of fluids are vital information for design, operation (including safety considerations) and maintenance in the fluid processing or continuous manufacturing industries. Among the thermodynamic properties, some are more important and pervasive with vapor pressure being possibly the most important of all. Practical handling of any fluid requires knowledge of its vapor pressure, and vapor pressure (or boiling point) is invariably among the first properties measured for any substance.
