Observations of the phenomenon of ion exchange date from ancient times. The ‘mechanism’ of the reaction, however, was established in 1850 by two English chemists, H. S. Thompson and J. T. Way, but it is only in the past few decades that the subject has expanded to become a true science from which extensive industrial applications have emerged. Progress in both the theoretical understanding and process developments of ion exchange has been rapid with the one complementing the other. In the academic sphere, the growth of knowledge has paralleled closely the physical chemistry interpretation of the behaviour of concentrated solutions of electrolytes. This is not unexpected since ion exchange materials are in effect electrolytes, albeit mostly solid ones, and in some respects they behave in an identical fashion.

The partition of a solute between two immiscible solvents is a major technique in separation, both in the laboratory and in industry. This technique has been designated liquid–liquid distribution by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), but it is more commonly called solvent extraction, the term we use. Solvent extraction has been developed in a broad field of applications: (1) for studying inorganic and organic complex equilibria, either for fundamental understanding of solution equilibria and kinetics or for developing selective separation schemes; (2) for separations in analytical chemistry; (3) for large-scale industrial separation processes in the inorganic, organic, pharmaceutical, and biochemical industries; and (4) for industrial waste treatment. It also serves as a base for other analytical techniques, such as liquid partition chromatography and ion-selective electrodes.

Usually one seeks out a career, and, although I chose my career, I never realized how that choice was to impact my life. Although I chose heat treatment as a career, I did not make a conscious choice for nitriding; the subject of nitriding chose me. In 1960, I was a final-year apprentice at DeHavilland Propellors, Lostock, United Kingdom. My project with a colleague was to evaluate the nitriding process for the DeHavilland Aircraft Group. It was at that time that the subject of nitriding chose me.

Metal clusters occupy a central role in chemistry. Since the first edition of this book in 1983, several revolutions have occurred vis a` vis scientific studies of the marine nitrogen cycle. Just consider some of the words and phrases, that appear in this edition but were unknown or seldom-used by marine scientists in 1983. Here are just a few: anammox, archaea, polymerase chain reaction, isotopomer, trace metal limitation. In 1983, we were in the early stages of just being able to properly enumerate the bacteria occurring in sea water. Now we talk about their inherent genetic capabilities of bacteria and archaea, and we are beginning to understand that viruses also play an important role. With respect to the oceanic fixed-N budget several source and sink terms have been increased several-fold, suggesting much more rapid turnover than envisioned in 1983. Thus this book appears at an ‘‘interesting time’’ vis a` vis changes in our understanding of nitrogen in the marine environment.

Various atomic spectrometric methods form an essential part of the modern instrumental methods of analysis. The most widely used of these methods is atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). The popularity of AAS can be attributed to its selectivity, simplicity, and convenience in use. The high sensitivity of graphite furnace AAS is very important in many applications. Plasma atomic emission spectrometry (plasma AES) has become more and more important for the determination of traces in a great variety of samples. The complementary nature of plasma AES and AAS capabilities for trace elemental analysis is an important feature of these techniques. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) has become a ‘hot’ analytical technique during the last few years, and is being used in many branches of science.

In 1985, the author wrote a book titled Plasma Polymerization, Academic Press. This book is an expanded version of that publication, but the title is changed according to the progress made in understanding the phenomena and important developments of interface engineering. Plasma Polymerization has two arguable terms, i.e., ‘‘plasma’’ and ‘‘polymerization.’’ Is the glow discharge used for ‘‘plasma polymerization’’ in the state of ‘‘plasma’’? Are the chemical reactions that occur in glow discharge ‘‘polymerizations’’? The answers to these questions are yes and no depending on the definition and the meaning of these terms. If plasma is not an adequate term to describe low-pressure glow discharge, what term can be used to describe glow discharge? Similarly, if polymerization is not a proper term to describe the material formation that takes place in the glow discharge, what term represents the process better than polymerization? This book explains why luminous chemical vapor deposition (LCVD) is chosen to replace plasma polymerization.
